1. What are some of the main political proposals of the British Liberals?
Quines són les principals propostes polítiques dels liberals britànics?

Fairer taxes, with the lowest paid paying no tax at all; carbon emissions reduced to 0% by 2050; investment in green economy and job creation; greater investment in education for children from poor backgrounds through a pupil premium.
Impostos més justos -els sous més baixos no en pagarien cap-. Reduir les emissions de CO2 al 0% l'any 2050. Invertir en economia “verda” i en la creació de llocs de treball. Més inversió en l’educació per als nens i nenes d’origen humil mitjançant el sistema Pupil Premium (Prima per alumne d’origen pobre).


2. How would you assess the recent electoral campaign and the options for forming a government?
Com valora la recent campanya electoral i les opcions de formar govern?

Nick Clegg starred in the “prime ministerial” debates and pushed the LibDems up from 20% to 30% in the polls. We fell back in the last days after ferocious false propaganda about membership of the euro and our immigration policies.
Nick Clegg va tenir una actuació estel·lar als debats televisats dels candidats a premier, el que va fer pujar els liberaldemòcrates d’un 20% a un 30% en les enquestes. La falsa i dura propaganda sobre la suposada incorparació britànica a l'euro i amb relació a la nostra política d’immigració no ens ha deixat avançar.


3. What is your opinion about Catalonia and political Catalanism?
Quina es la seva opinió sobre Catalunya i el catalanisme polític?

I have loved Barcelona and Catalonia since I studied for a year at the Universidad de Barcelona in 1965/6. My friends were Catalinistas and I became one too, and remain so. Government must be by consent. If a majority of the people wish for a different sort of Government, including independence within the European Union, that is their right, although it would be essential to retain good relations with the Southern neighbour.
He estimat Barcelona i Catalunya des que hi vaig viure el curs1965/66, quan era estudiant a la Universitat de Barcelona. Els meus amics eren catalanistes i jo també me’n vaig fer. I encara en sóc. El govern ha de ser un govern de consens. Si la majoria del poble vol un govern diferent -inclosa la independència dins la Unió Europea- té el dret a reclamar-ho. Tot i que seria essencial mantenir bones relacions amb el veí del sud.


4. How do you see the approaching Catalan elections, which should take place at the end of this year? What leader would you say stands out?
Com veu les properes eleccions catalanes, previstes per a finals d'aquest any? Quin líder destacaria?

Obviously Artur Mas, with his up to date ideas about the economy, and the need for the environment to be at the heart of politics.
Òbviament, Artur Mas; per les seves avançades idees sobre economia i per la necessitat de col·locar el medi ambient al cor de la política.


5. What do you think could be the most important contribution of Catalonia to Europe?
Quina pot ser la principal aportació de Catalunya a Europa?

An industrious, well educated and Europe-orientated people with an ancient European culture. Inspirational ideas including the pan European high speed freight network, launched in Barcelona.
Un poble treballador, ben educat i abocat a Europa que té una antiga cultura europea. La promoció d'idees com ara la xarxa paneuropea de transport ràpid de mercaderies, que es va inaugurar a Barcelona.


6. What do you think about the policies of the two principal Spanish political parties, PP and PSOE?
Què en pensa de les polítiques dels dos principals partits polítics espanyols, PP i PSOE?

Until now, PSOE has seemed to be in denial about Spain’s economic crisis. The latest measures proposed by Zapatero are flawed, will provoke unnecessary union hostility, and will only scratch the surface of the problem. Rajoy does not command respect at home or abroad.
Fins ara, el PSOE semblava negar la crisi econòmica espanyola. Les darreres mesures proposades per Zapatero són errònies, perquè tindran l'efecte de provocar innecessàries mobilitzacions dels sindicats que només grataran la superfície del problema. En Rajoy no mereix respecte ni a casa ni fora de casa.


7. Do you think it is important to give greater political power to sub-state entities of the European Union?
Considera important donar més poder polític als ens subestatals de la Unió Europea?

LibDems are great believers in localism – decisions should be taken as close as possible to those affected by them.
Els liberaldemòcrates creiem en el localisme. Les decisions s’haurien de prendre el més a prop possible d'aquells a qui afecten.


8. What are the most surprising aspects of the democratic functioning of the Catalan and Spanish institutions in comparison with the United Kingdom?
Quins són els aspectes més sorprenents del funcionament democràtic de les institucions catalanes i espanyoles en comparació amb les britàniques?

In the rest of Spain, a 2 party system which claim to be the home of liberalism and clearly are not. A strong third force needs to emerge, as in Catalonia.
A Espanya, que un sistema bipartidista es vulgui presentar com la casa del liberalisme quan clarament no ho és. És necessari que emergeixi una tercera força important, com ja passa a Catalunya.


9. Is Liberalism the motor for change of the 21st century?
El liberalisme és el motor del canvi del segle XXI?

Undoubtedly. Respect for human rights, the rule of law, the freedom of the individual to chart his or her life without undue interference from the state, these are all ideas whose time has clearly come.
Indubtablement. El respecte pels drets humans; el respecte per la llei; les llibertats individuals -ser capaços de planificar les nostres vides sense la interferència de l’estat-, són idees per aquest temps.
