Several Members of European Parliament (MEP) have started a campaign for a single seat
European Parliament, which would be located in Brussels. The MEP’s supporting the initiative have set up the website
http://www.oneseat.eu/, in which they detail all problems caused by the geographical dispersion. Nowadays, the institution’s buildings are spread over three cities, namely Luxembourg, Strasbourg and Brussels. The initiators of this campaign calculated that the cost originated by this incongruence elevates to approximately 200 million euros a year. The MEP’s estimate that this sum represents 15% of the European Parliament’s budget. The members of the campaign hope to mobilize European taxpayers and to collect one million signatures, which they will submit to the European Commission. Until today no legal act determinates the procedures and conditions of such a petition, but this initiative inserts perfectly in the will of the European Commission to encourage the citizen’s participation in European politics.
